چکیده

This paper presents a so-called Limited Column Generation technique for solving the Local Access Network Design and Expansion problems. We first define our models for the design problem and the expansion problem. Then, we formulate both problems into a tree-partitioning problem with exponential number of variables. Because its intersection graph is a chordal graph and, of course, a perfect graph, its linear programming relaxation has integral vertices. A dedicated column generation procedure is developed so that the master tree-partitioning linear program can be solved by just generating n columns, where n is the number of nodes in the network. Particularly, for the design problem, the subproblem of generating a column is the Tree Knapsack problem. We believe that such decomposition procedure provides not only an algorithm and a complexity bound for finding the exact optimal solution, but also a practical approach to solve real problems. Subject classification: Networks/graphs: applications, theory, tree algorithms. Programming: decomposition, column generation. Reformulation, Column Generation and Lagrangian Relaxation for Local Access Network Design Problems

In this paper, we present several models of Local Access Network Design and Expansion problems, and discuss different alternatives for solving these problems, as well as the relationships among different approaches. One of our results shows that both Design and Expansion problems provide examples for a rare situation in which the lower bound from Lagrangian relaxation is exactly equal to the op...

Enhanced compact models for the connected subgraph problem and for the shortest path problem in digraphs with negative cycles

We investigate the minimum-weight connected subgraph problem. The importance of this problem stems from the fact that it constitutes the backbone of many network design problems having applications in several areas including telecommunication, energy, and distribution planning. We show that this problem is NP-hard, an we propose a new polynomial-size nonlinear mixed-integer programming model. W...

Large-scale optimization with the primal-dual column generation method

The primal-dual column generation method (PDCGM) is a general-purpose column generation technique that relies on the primal-dual interior point method to solve the restricted master problems. The use of this interior point method variant allows to obtain suboptimal and well-centered dual solutions which naturally stabilizes the column generation. A reduction in the number of calls to the oracle...

Design of capacitated networks with tree configurations

This paper considers the problem of designing a capacitated network with a tree configuration (CTP). For a given set of nodes with their capacities, k types of link facilities with various characteristics, and installation cost for connecting each pair of nodes using each type of link facility, the problem is to find a tree network which satisfies the given traffic requirements between all pair...
